When we met Darren, he was sad and dejected. We took him for a coffee where he explained his situation. Darren was unable to secure himself a home due to poor mental health. Before we met him, he had slept rough on the streets and sofa surfed for over 2 years. This had negatively impacted his life in many ways, including being unable to hold down a job, claim benefits due to no fixed address, and unable to consistently see his child.
While helping clients find new homes, we also address their wellbeing. We know that overlooking this aspect could lead them right back to where they started.
Identifying Darren's needs, we guided him into supported accommodation designed for those dealing with mental health issues, aiming for lasting positive change. After residing there for 6 months, we continued our support, assisting him in finding a permanent home.
Understanding the crucial link between a stable home and well-being, we provided him with hands-on help to move home. Many of our clients with low incomes struggle to create a thriving home, so we ensured Darren had the essentials such as furniture, cooking equipment and bedding.
Fast forward to late 2023, and Darren's update brings us joy. He remains in the home we helped him secure, has a job, and is positive about his future. It's a testament to his perseverance and hard work, and we are pleased we could support him on his way.
When families flee domestic abuse, their entire world is thrown upside down. Often, they leave with just the clothes on their backs, facing numerous hurdles to secure a positive future. This was the reality for Laura and her three children when we met them in 2021.
Recovering from being badly beaten by her partner, Laura found herself in emergency accommodation in the middle of winter. Their situation was dire – they had been temporarily housed but had no electricity, lights, heating, or beds. Referred to us by the local council, we stepped in to help.
Our initial support included advocating their rights and needs to their landlord, providing essential items such as clothing, beds, a food parcel, and some toys/entertainment for the children. After this we assisted Laura in navigating the complex process of arranging benefits. Laura also attended our workshops at our community allotment space, where she connected with others facing similar challenges.
Over the following months, our assistance expanded. We continued to furnish their living space with more furniture and white goods, ensuring a more comfortable home environment. Through our Christmas holiday drive, we also arranged a Christmas dinner and presents for the family so that they could feel more positive at such a stressful time. Small gestures like this can make families with small children feel more comfortable in a home they are not used to.
Recently we spoke to Laura, when she brought her children to one of our sensory garden sessions. She is still housed, the children are attending school and she is getting back on her feet. Laura's journey is a testament to her resilience and determination to rebuild.
Siobhan's life took an unexpected turn when she was forced to leave her home due to a local regeneration scheme. Without the financial means for a deposit or a guarantor to secure new accommodation, Siobhan and her children found themselves unable to rent a home. The council temporarily placed them in a hotel, where the family of four shared a single room. However, the hotel didn't provide food or allow any cooking equipment in the rooms, leaving Siobhan struggling to afford regular takeaways and often going without hot meals.
Recognising the challenges they faced, we stepped in to support Siobhan and her family. Initially, we provided food support and connected her with local organisations offering hot meals. Seeking to alleviate the strain of their cramped living conditions, the family found relief in participating in some of our allotment activities.
After four months, we offered practical support, assisting them in securing more stable accommodation. This included providing a sofa and a fridge, laying the groundwork for a positive home foundation. As their financial situation remains challenging, we continue to support them with food parcels, ensuring they have the essentials until their circumstances improve.
Siobhan's journey reflects the resilience of families facing unexpected challenges, and our commitment to providing ongoing support as they work towards a brighter and more stable future.
